Jamaican Portrait & Event Photographer I started off as many contemporary photographers did, with a crappy phone and lack of knowledge of the basic elements and techniques of a student or professional photographer.  My first year in college led me to the discovery of the DSLR Camera, this was a joy for me because I have always seen them but never have I ever been this close to holding one. But before I could hold the camera I had to learn the history of Jamaican photography, the parts of the camera and their functions.  The techniques associated with photography were all under one heading; Composition. A Composition is all that is within an exposed image.  My journey thus far has led me to experiment with the various forms of photography. I have found that I most enjoy Portrait and event photography. I have been fortunate enough to have met and work with some of the most beautiful personalities a photographer could ever want.  As a Jamaican photography, I found t

How Crime and violence Affects Photographers in Jamaica https://buzzsouthafrica.com/top-10-most-feared-crime-in-south-africa-neither-murder-nor-rape-is-most-feared/ Being a Jamaican I am no stranger to crime and violence, however, I was not brought up in the extreme volatile environs where I have been exposed to the actual violence. The perspective from which I am coming is much like you an outsider looking in, the only difference is that I am sometimes in the physical situation. Being a photographer it is in my nature to be adventurous and somewhat fearless, but sometimes this is not always a good thing, I have put myself in some weird situations shooting in uncharted territories. The fear is always present but yet I am always aware and alert.  The fear that is must cripple for me as a photographer is being shot for doing what I really love. It is the ignorance of people that leads them to attack photographers because all we strive to do is create or capture the truene

Model: Romario Newell Shot with a Nikon D3200 ISO 400 f 1.8 /50mm Location Stony Hill, Kingston, Jamaica NATURAL LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY Natural light photography is the art of using nature or available light to capture images.  What to take into consideration when shooting in the natural light? The direction of your light source: The sun moves throughout the day and the direction will vary based on the time and the geological location. The light direction will determine the type of look and quality that you will be able to achieve.  The temperature of the light: The temperature of the light is the mood or feel of the light. Blues or greys are generally cool colours and will give a cool feeling. Reds, yellows and oranges are warm colours and those will give a vibrant feeling. These colours will appear based on location and times of the day.  Shoot in the shade: The shade is great for shooting portraits, this is so because locations such as Jamaica can get extremely

Portrait Photography in Jamaica I am Norbert Smellie I am a Jamaican Portrait and Event Photographer based in Kingston. I am extremely passionate about people and photography. It is always very interesting to me to see how individuals react when I pull out my camera to take their portraits, some are happy and some become so self-conscious that it makes the mood in the room very tense.  I have learned over a period of four years how to handle different personalities when taken a portrait. It helps when I speak with my client to get a field of who they are and introduce them to who I am.  I love portrait photography, it shows who a person really is if done correctly, it gives the viewer an insight into the life of the person in the image.  I am very interested in learning as much as I can about people in order to be able to understand them better. I also love the group and Family portraits. The group dynamic is a bit more complicated as there is always an assigned role
